Bierstadt then studied landscape painting under Carl Friedrich Lessing and Andreas Achenbach at the Dusseldorf Academy. In 1853, Bierstadt returned to the United States and began to hold art exhibitions in his hometown. He quickly rose to fame in New York City after exhibiting his large-scale artwork at the National Academy of Design in 1858. In 1859, Bierstadt took part in an expedition to the West, where he studied the Rocky Mountains, Yosemite Valley, Oregon and the Pacific Northwest Coast. He began to exhibit his western artwork back in New York and became even more popular. Bierstadt was honored with the French Legion of Honor in 1867 and the Austrian Sankt-Stanislaus-Orden in 1869. In 1871-1873, he traveled to California, the West and Canada with his wife, who had taken up residence in the Bahamas for her health. In 1874, Bierstadt moved to Irvington-on-Hudson, where he had a villa with a large landscape park overlooking the Tappan Zee. He continued to travel and create commissioned works for the US government, such as two monumental paintings in Washington, DC. After his villa burned down in 1882, Bierstadt moved to New York City, where his popularity began to wane due to the rise of realism and naturalism in the art world. He died in 1902. In the 1960s, Bierstadt was rediscovered and his smaller oil sketches found appreciation. Today, he is remembered as one of the most important painters of the Dusseldorf School and the Hudson River School, with his work exhibited in the most prominent museums in the US and Europe.
