Thomas Baines was a British artist and explorer who lived from 1820 to 1875. Born in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, his career began when he was apprenticed to a coach painter at the age of 16. In his twenties, he left England for South Africa and found work as a scenic and portrait artist, as well as an official war artist for the British Army. In 1855, he joined Augustus Gregory’s expedition across northern Australia as the official artist and storekeeper. His association with the North Australian Expedition was highly praised, so much so that Mount Baines and the Baines River were named in his honour. In 1858, Baines accompanied David Livingstone along the Zambezi and was one of the first white men to view Victoria Falls. Later, in 1869, he led one of the first gold prospecting expeditions to Mashonaland in what is now Rhodesia. In 1870, he was granted a concession to explore for gold between the Gweru and Hunyani rivers by Lobengula, leader of the Matabele nation. At the time of his death in Durban in 1875, Baines had left behind a legacy of exploration and artistry. He is buried in West Street Cemetery.
